What is Bunion?
A true bunion isn’t just the growth of bone but also the movement of the first metatarsal bone involving the big toe and subsequent the big toe moves towards the smaller toes. Although in some cases it may run in families, if you develop a bunion, it doesn’t mean your child will also develop one as well. Individuals having ligament laxity giving with more flexible joints and women are more likely to develop bunions. Some people with systemic arthritis such as rheumatoid arthritis may also be more likely to develop bunions. Shoes may have an association but likely are not the cause, per se, of the condition. The shoes however may rub on the prominent bone and may cause pain.
What are the causes of bunions?
Bunions are caused by a number of different things, genetics is probably the biggest part of it. however, types of shoes that you wear activities or other injuries you’ve had in the past could all influence the occurrence of a bunion, or cause a bunion that’s small to develop into a larger one. we get asked often if there’s anything to do to prevent bunions from forming and generally there’s not a really great answer for that. most of the time we try to have people to protect their feet by wearing good shoes and paying attention to any pressure that’s being placed on the toe. if people don’t develop bunions, we start with the easy conservative measures first to hopefully avoid that from progressing, but that’s not always successful and sometimes. if we end up going on to surgery that will help to ensure that that bunion isn’t as much of a problem down the road. Mayans are generally pretty painful they start off mild and they can get worse bunions to come in all sorts of sizes and shapes. so here’s a bunion and we’ve got the prominence on the inner side of the toe pushing out and usually that’s where people will have friction or that will rub on their shoe as it bun uniforms. this metatarsal will start to swing over and that allows the distal part or the farthest part of the toe to swing over and usually you’ll start to rub on that second toe so that bunion actually involves the whole process of all three bones with the joint in the middle that’s the biggest issue as a bunion gets more symptomatic and starts to rub on your shoe that’s the time to start looking at things that we can do so we first start treating bunions
What is the Treatment options of Bunions?
we start with a lot of the easy things there’s different devices we can use some called toe sleeves or toast spacers there’s also bunion splints which we can use to wrap around the toe to pull it over they generally work really well when you’re wearing them but as soon as you take it off the budget can come back so those are more for people who can tolerate wearing them in a shoe that doesn’t interfere with their activities and some people need to go on to surgery when we look at surgery try to tailor the particular surgery to the individual because there’s a lot of different options so that will involve correcting both the alignment of the bones the joint and sometimes even correcting or tightening the like nuts the recovery from surgery is going to vary depending upon the particular surgery that’s chosen again that’s tailored to the individual so sometimes we’ll allow people to go into a boot immediately after surgery to start walking on it but there are some cases where we have to be very careful to protect the bunion and we don’t allow people to walk on it for the first few weeks until we know it’s safe to do so the techniques and the ways that we correct bunions now have gotten to the point where we’re doing them with less invasive techniques and the recoveries are not as lengthy so it’s important to talk to your physician about what we can do now to make the bunion recovery easier than what it’s been in the past
